I qualified as a dentist in India in 2015 and practised there in teaching hospitals, where patients often arrived with years of untreated disease. You learn two things quickly in a place like that: how to work through a long list without rushing the person in front of you, and how to explain a hard diagnosis kindly.
We moved to Australia at the end of 2023. Overseas qualifications aren't automatically recognised here, so while I studied for the Australian Dental Council exams I worked as a dental assistant and receptionist in Sydney practices — assisting across general, restorative and surgical treatment, and handling scheduling, patient enquiries and health fund claims at the front desk.
It's an unusual route back into the profession, and I'd recommend it. I've now sat on both sides of the chair: the person doing the treatment, and the person handing over the instruments. I understand what actually makes an Australian practice run well, and I've watched hundreds of patients try to make sense of what treatment costs and what their cover pays for.
I was certified by the ADC in July 2026 and I'm registered with AHPRA. I believe in unhurried explanation, no pressure, and treating people the way I'd want my own family treated — whether that's a child having their first check-up or someone who's avoided the dentist for years.
